In order to manufacture lead pellets, a shot tower is employed. The tower is translucent with an upper level where the lead is heated until molten, this state being maintained in smelting crucibles. Subsequently the molten metal is poured through a copper sieve high in the tower and filters through the orifices of the copper sheet, thus forming drops which begin to fall according to what is known as Plateau-Rayleigh instability – similar to the slow dripping from a water tap with a low flow rate. The tiny drops of liquid lead fall more than forty metres from the top of the tower into a tank of water at the tower bottom, cooling as they fall and, due to the physical phenomenon known as surface tension, solidifying into spheres. The now fully cooled balls are checked for roundness and sorted by size; a slightly inclined table being used for checking roundness and those that are “out of round” recycled to be re-melted.
